Tshikwalo: Bush Getaways the Way They Should Be

Not all bush getaways are the same. You’ve already decided you need a break; the only question is what kind. One night or three, a game drive at sunrise or dinner under the stars, here’s what Tshikwalo actually looks like.

How Long Do You Have?

Not everyone has a week to spare, and this safari lodge is set up for that reality. Bush getaways don’t need to be long to be worthwhile. The only thing that matters is that you actually go.

  • One night is enough to reset. Arrive, relax, have dinner, sleep well, and wake up to the sounds of the bush before heading back. The 1-night romantic package is built for couples looking for a quiet escape without the planning overhead.
  • Two nights tends to be the ideal getaway for most. A morning game drive, quality time in the afternoon exploring the reserve, a proper dinner, and a second drive before you leave. Enough to feel like you actually went somewhere and had a proper bush experience.
  • Three nights is where it stops feeling like a quick trip. There’s time for multiple game drives, bush walks, a sundowner as the sun sets over the private game reserve, and the kind of peaceful sleep that only happens when there’s no traffic outside. If a bush escape has been sitting on the back burner for a while, this is the one to book.

Game Drives and Bush Walks

Dinokeng Game Reserve is a Big Five game reserve, and the guided game drives at Tshikwalo cover ground that most guests don’t get to see. The lodge holds concessions in the northern areas and restricted parts of the south, and rangers stay in radio contact throughout the drive. It makes a practical difference to the wildlife encounters you’re likely to have, setting this game lodge apart from many lodges in the region.

Morning drives head out into the wild with coffee and a light breakfast in the bush. Afternoon drives run into golden hour with snacks and drinks along the way. Drives last 2 to 3 hours. Sightings of elephants, lions, and other animals are never guaranteed, but that’s the nature of authentic bush experiences and what makes each safari its own thing.

Bush walks move at a different pace. Led by a game ranger through the Dinokeng bushveld, you pick up details that disappear from a moving vehicle, the birds, the tracks, the smaller wildlife going about their day in the quiet of the natural habitat.

Dining and Sundowners

Tshikwalo’s Klein Tambotie restaurant runs from breakfast through to dinner, and the bushveld setting does a lot of the work. There’s wine and gin tasting on offer, as well as light lunches and snack platters for a more relaxed afternoon. For something more deliberate, the romantic bush dinner takes place in a dedicated bush area on the lodge premises, lit by lanterns and candlelight, with a private table for two. There’s also a bush picnic at the Tambotie venue for those who prefer something a little more relaxed under the trees.

The Braai,Boma and the Fire

Guests staying in the chalets have access to their own private braai and guests staying at Tshikwalo or Munanga Guesthouse have their own private boma with firewood provided. There’s something about sitting around a crackling fire in the African bush at night that’s difficult to replicate anywhere else. It’s one of those unforgettable moments that stays with you long after the holiday is over, the kind of hidden gem detail that makes a safari lodge worth coming back to.

Accommodation

Accommodation at Tshikwalo ranges from comfortable self-catering chalets to two exclusive guesthouse options. The Tshikwalo Guesthouse, situated 500m from the main lodge, can accommodate up to 20 guests and comes with a fully equipped kitchen, private swimming pool, braai area, and optional chef catering. The Munanga Guesthouse offers a more intimate setup with 11 en-suite rooms and a personal chef who prepares all meals during your stay. There’s also a loft room for families travelling with kids. For couples, the main lodge chalets offer everything you need for a romantic getaway without the fuss.

Year-End and Seasonal Specials

Tshikwalo puts together year-end packages for groups and companies looking to escape the city and close out the year somewhere memorable in South Africa. It tends to fill up, so earlier is better if year-end is on your radar.

The dry months between May and September generally offer the clearest game viewing of the year, with less vegetation and animals drawn to water sources. Each season in this private game reserve has its own rhythm, and Tshikwalo has something on offer throughout the year to match.
